Reference 16760 was the very first GMT Master II model. For that reason alone, it's a very prized collector's item, but it also features several other intriguing design elements that die-hard collectors adore, such as the red and black Coke bezel, large crown guards, and fatter case. Interestingly, the GMT Master II ref. 16760 was only ever produced with the distinctive red and black bezel insert, never any other colorway. The bezel on the example we have here exhibits signs of wear and fading that only add to its vintage aesthetic and collectability. It also features Tritium lume in a warm hue, a modern scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, a 78360 Oyster bracelet, and the caliber 3085 Perpetual movement with an independent GMT hand.
Many collectors also refer to the inaugural GMT Master II as the "Fat Lady" Or "Sophia Loren" because it features a fatter case to better accommodate the then-new movement. In true Rolex fashion, the case and movement were quickly refined via its successor ref. 16710 for a lower profile on the wrist. Reference 16760 is a truly unique edition of the famed pilot's watch that was only produced for a few years between 1983 and 1988.
