This Rolex watch is in great, honest vintage condition. The case is in good condition with some scratches and wear. The bezel is in good condition with some wear, scratches and nicks. The dial is in great condition and has developed light patina with some wear in the center. The lume on the dial has developed patina and aged to a consistent pale yellow/ creamy color. The hands have developed patina and the lume in the hands has aged to a pale yellow/ creamy color that matches the dial. The 24 hour hand has faded from orange to yellow which is not uncommon. The tip of the seconds hand has developed some patina. The lume in the hands show some signs of wear when looking closely. The bracelet is in great condition with light stretch between the links. The clasp has a couple slight dings and has been polished but the crown is still clearly visible. The crystal has some scratches and wear.
The 1655 Explorer is instantly recognizable from its bright orange 24 hour hand to its steel 24 hour bezel. Rolex came out with this model in 1971 and it was specifically made for cave explorers. The purpose of the orange 24 hour hand is to help the wearer distinguish day vs night in environments where this isn't easily noticeable, like in a cave with complete darkness. Rolex made the ref. 1655 until approximately 1985 and Rolex made a few different variations during the production. Collectors have identified five different dials that were originally offered in the ref. 1655. The watch we have here has a lovely Mark 5 dial and would be the last dial variation before Rolex discontinued the 1655 and came out with the successor, 16550.
This Explorer II is coming directly from the family of the original owner and has aged beautifully over the years. The lume has aged to a pleasing pale yellow color and the GMT hand has faded from bright orange to a pale yellow that compliments the lume nicely. These 1655's were sleepers for the longest time. We have seen collector interest rise due to its interesting aesthetic that is unlike any other vintage sport Rolex.
