This Air-King is in overall great vintage condition, consistent with age. The case is in good condition with normal signs of wear. The numbers are crisp and clearly visible between the lugs. The inside caseback is stamped “1002” which is something we have seen before for ref. 5500’s since they are the same size. The caseback has a personal engraving that reads “To John J. Zampino Jr. In Appreciation from Calvert Distillery Company 1967 – 1977.” The dial is in overall great condition with light patina. The lume on the dial has developed patina and is an attractive yellow color. The hands have developed patina and the lume has developed patina. The Calvert logo on the dial has remained vibrant. This watch has a C&I USA Rolex rivet Oyster bracelet with XX links; the clasp is stamped “76.” Indicating its’ from 1976.
Pre-owned Rolex Air-King ref 5500 (1976) is a second-generation model produced from the 1950s to the 1980s. Many variations came to market then, including the popular all-steel ref. 5500 for sale here. The example we have here is not your regular Air-King it was originally given as a 10 year appreciation gift to an employee of Calvert Distilleries as mentioned on the caseback engraving. The dial is adorned with the Calvert distillery logo giving this watch a unique look.
We have seen a rise in interest for Rolex watches with logo’s on the dials and here is a fairly uncommon one. Rolex used to take on contracts for companies and put logos on the dials, like the popular “Dominos” Rolex and others. This is something they don’t do anymore so we see collectors gravitate to them, especially if they have an affinity to the brand.
