The Explorer watches were produced to withstand extreme adventures as evidenced but its prototype model being given to mountain climbers that successfully ascended Mount Everest under brutal conditions. The durable watch survived with flying colors and quickly went into production. From that point in the late 60’s to today, the Explorer model has remained virtually unchanged. That is a true testament to Rolex’s quality, durability and tradition.
This watch reference 1016 is fitted with a beautiful matte dial and lume plots that have aged to a warm creamy yellow color which collectors are finding extremely desirable currently. The lume plots match the hands as well. The Mercedes hand has some very slight cracking in the luminous material. This watch case has been previously polished but has aged well with its bevels clearly visible. It is on a later 78360 oyster bracelet.
