The present lot, nicknamed the "Big Daytona" is an early example of the Rolex reference 6239. During the beginning of the model's production, Rolex experimented with several dial variations in order to come to its design for the Cosmograph Daytona. While the very earliest reference 6239’s featured a small Daytona signature below the "Rolex Cosmograph" text, Rolex also introduced a different dial which featured a slightly larger "Daytona" text, such as the present watch.
Apart from this unique dial feature, the present watch is preserved in outstanding condition. Featuring sharp finishes to the top of the lugs, the case is incredibly well preserved for a vintage sports watch. The bezel, calibrated to 200 units has been kept in excellent condition with a majority of its enamel. The dial too is wonderful featuring hour makers which have aged to a light creamy patina and matching the original hands. Further enhancing the watch is the rivet bracelet stamped 1-71. The present example is in lovely well-preserved condition and with its “Big Daytona” configuration, it will be a watch all collectors want, but few will own.
This watch does not draw the attention. Or reputation of a gold Rolex. Yet a more powerful statment, when worn.
