Pre-owned Rolex Daytona ref 16520 (1996) comes from what collectors often call the “Zenith era,” a short but important chapter in Daytona history. Before Rolex fully committed to producing its own chronograph movements, it turned to Zenith’s legendary El Primero as a base, then heavily reworked it in-house. Rolex removed the date, slowed the beat rate for longevity, and upgraded key components, ultimately creating the caliber 4030. It was still rooted in Zenith architecture, but very much a Rolex movement by the time it was finished. That brief period is exactly why these Rolex Daytona Panda watches have become so collectible. Once Rolex introduced its fully in-house caliber 4130 in 2000, the Zenith-powered models instantly became a closed chapter. This example features the classic white dial with black-ringed sub-dials, a configuration many collectors gravitate toward for its contrast and balance.
