Launched in 1971, the Rolex Explorer II, provided a fresh update to the existing ‘Explorer’ line. Designed as a functional and durable aide for intrepid explorers, the bright orange, luminous 24-hour triangle tipped hand glowed under any light condition. Not designed to be a gmt timepiece, the Explorer II’s primary function was to inform the wearer the current 12 hour cycle of the sun, meaning was it day or night.
Due to a limited market for such specialized timepieces, very few examples were initially sold. Reference 1655 is fairly rare, especially when compared to other Rolex sports watches like the popular GMT and ubiquitous Submariner. Interestingly, reference 1655 is also known as the ‘Steve McQueen’. even though there is no concrete evidence confirming the actor ever wore this watch.
This timepiece is beautiful, the case had recently been polished so it has nice strong corners and no scratches. The bezel is a service replacement and is in great shape. The Mark IV dial is in excellent shape and the hands have aged a few shades darker than the hour markers. A nice touch is that the date disk is the correct brushed steel color that is correct for this era. Lastly, the 78360 oyster bracelet is in great shape with little stretch or wear.
