This Rolex Daytona is in overall great condition. The case is in good condition with some scratches and normal signs of wear. The caseback has a personal engraving that reads "To Doug on our 13th Anniversary 15th April 1987 Love, Linda." The inside caseback is stamped "6263" which is not uncommon. Rolex was known to mis-match casebacks with different reference numbers on the similar models. The numbers are crisp and clearly visible between the lugs. The bezel is in great condition with some minor wear and scratches. This watch has retained its correct Mark 3 style screw-down pushers. The dial is in overall great condition with some patina and light wear. The sub-dials have developed some patina/ wear and the dial has some light marks in the center towards the 9 o'clock, this can be hard to notice depending on the lighting and if the hands are covering. The lume plots have developed patina and aged to an even attractive pale yellow color. The plots are all intact. The hands have developed light patina and the lume matches the lume on the dial. This watch has a 78350 Oyster bracelet with 13 links and 571 end links. The clasp is date stamped "K4" indicating its from 1986. The bracelet is in overall great condition with normal signs of wear and light stretch between the links.
Rolex came out with the Daytona in 1963 and it is still in production today. Rolex came out with the reference 6265 around 1971 and this would be the last generation of the manually wound Daytona. The defining characteristics of the reference 6265 are the screw down style pushers and stainless steel bezel. Rolex offered this model in a few variations in stainless steel. Rolex offered them with a black dial with white sub registers, like the example we have here today or with a silver dial with black sub registers. Rolex offered these with an exotic black or white dial and these are known as Paul Newman Daytona's. They also made these in 14k and 18k gold.
These Daytona's with the red "Daytona" text have been nicknamed the "Big Red" Daytona for obvious reasons and are some of the most sought after vintage watches in general. Collectors tend to gravitate towards this variation, especially the black dial variant.
The example we have here today comes directly from the original owner who got it from his wife for their 13 wedding anniversary in 1987. It has a light engraving on the back commemorating this occasion. In addition to coming from the original owner, he kept the outer cardboard box, filled in guarantee papers, hang-tag, caseback sticker, and product literature booklets! When examining all the goodies closely, we can see that the hang-tag has the corresponding serial number on one side and the cost on the other! In 1987 this watch cost 2,195 Canadian Dollars. When looking at the papers we can see the watch was originally purchased at Montecristo Jewelers and the papers have a "700" punched in which is the Rolex country code for Canada. We love it when all these little details line up.
