While Rolex has been making Chronographs since the 1930’s, it was not until the Release of the 6239 that it was finally named and categorized. The first 6239s released did not feature the Daytona name. Originally called the LeMans, it wasn’t long until the push into the US market and Rolex’s sponsorship of the 24 hour Daytona race that the watch was christened with its now infamous name the Cosmograph Daytona. The Rolex 6239 Introduction of two notable features to the brand's Chronographs. The first is the inverse color sub-dials and the second being the engraved tachometer bezel.
This particular watch features an early style bezel that is graduated to the 300 units per hour mark, which was dropped to the 200 mark after 1967. Two other things happened around this time to the 6239 Daytona as well. Rolex moved the “Daytona” name on the dial from the 12 o'clock mark to just above the 6 o’clock sub-dial, where it remains today on all modern models. They also transitioned the original pump pushers to the current screw-down version.
This watch features the early bezel, the early dial, the original pump pushers, and comes with its original box, making it a collectors dream. The manual wind 722 movement, black dial with silver sub-dials, and a Rolex USA Jubilee bracelet round out the truly classic feel of this stunning vintage timepiece.
This watch does not draw the attention. Or reputation of a gold Rolex. Yet a more powerful statment, when worn.
