Pre-owned Rolex Explorer ref 14270 (1994) is largely considered the first "modern" iteration of the mountaineer's tool watch. Released in 1989, it replaced ref. 1016, which Rolex made for decades between the 1960s and late 1980s. It has all the hallmarks of the Explorer watch up until this point, including a 36mm case, the iconic 3/6/9 Arabic numeral configuration, a stainless steel finish, and a black dial, only now the dial is glossy instead of matte like on later production ref. 1016s. What also sets ref. 14270 apart from its predecessor and makes it so desirable is that for the first time, the Arabic numerals are applied indices filled with lume, not painted, and the movement powering the watch is the high-beat caliber 3000. It remained in production until 2001 when it was discontinued and replaced with the first 6-digit model, ref. 114270.
