This Oyster Perpetual is in honest, vintage condition with wear consistent with age. The case is strong with some wear, nicks, and a couple dents on the nine o'clock side as well as one on the three o'clock side. The coin edge bezel has remained sharp and appears unpolished. The hallmark on the back of the one o'clock lug is crisp. The watch has retained it's correct "SUPER+OYSTER ROLEX" crown. This watch also has retained its all red-text date wheel. The dial has developed patina throughout giving it that quintessential vintage look. The dial has some darker patina from 3-5 and around 11-1 o'clock. The "Swiss Made" text at the bottom of the dial shows wear. The round lume plots on the dial have developed patina and darkened; the lume in the hour markers at 6, 9, & 12 o'clock have developed patina and are a mustard color. The hour markers and hands have developed patina. The lume in the hands has developed patina and darkened, matching the lume plots on the dial. The red "officially" text has remained vibrant.
Pre-owned Rolex Oyster Perpetual Ref. 6105 (circa 1952) is a fascinating watch because it sports the famous calendar display at 3 o'clock but is not distinguished by the "Datejust" name like later variations of the same reference number. Rolex would produce many different dial types for the ref. 6105, varying in typography, placement, and color. For example, there are some later-production ref. 6105's with the Datejust name printed on the dial and SWISS-only text below the 6-hour marker. This example has a "SWISS MADE" dial. Additionally, this model features bright red "OFFICIALLY" text at the top of the chronometer rating. The unique way the dial has aged over time ensures that it will never be identical to any other ref. 6105 - you won't find yourself running into anyone else with a watch exactly like this one on their wrist.
This example of the ref. 6105 comes with chronometer papers, which is relatively uncommon for a Rolex of this age. What's also interesting about ref. 6105 is that it doesn't have a Cyclops magnifier over the date because it wasn't yet a staple of the Rolex catalog when it was produced. The coin-edge bezel, red date wheel, and dial furniture remind us of the inaugural Datejust from 1945, adding even further to its provenance and desirability. Lastly, this ref. 6105 features a "Super" Oyster crown that pushes down instead of screwing into the case. It offers collectors a lot of value considering just how special this watch is.
