The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona has been associated with racing since its introduction as a reference in 1963, when “Daytona” did not yet appear on the dial. The watch was quickly named the Daytona in honor of the Daytona Beach race track in Florida and Rolex sponsors the “Rolex 24 at DAYTONA” (previously known as the 24 Hours of Daytona) race there early each year. To honor the winners, Rolex awards each winning driver a new Daytona watch and these are, obviously, extremely limited and prized by collectors. Only a few of these “Daytona Winner” Daytonas have come to market and they often command extremely high prices at auction.
The present watch comes from one of the winning drivers of the 2008 Rolex 24 at Daytona. Notably, it includes a special box with checkered flag artistic design on the top of the box, a large Rolex logo on the inside of the box (for use in the photograph of the winning drivers holding their watches), and the green Rolex guarantee card says ROLEX 24 AT DAYTONA on it. Furthermore, the watch is in very good condition, just with light scratches from minimal wear. Overall, this is a very special and unusual watch.
