When Rolex developed the Sea-Dweller in the 1960s, their goal was to expand upon the technology of the Submariner, which was already capable of venturing as far as 200 meters below the surface of the sea. By building a Helium Escape Valve into the case and allowing the pressure that accumulates within to escape properly, Rolex increased their depth rating to 610 meters (2,000 feet). The line of deep saturation dive watches debuted via reference 1665 in 1967 and included a standard 40mm case, domed Plexiglas crystal, Helium Escape Valve, dial topped with lume, and 60-minute rotatable bezel.
The “Great White” vintage Sea-Dweller 1665 didn’t come to market until a few years later in 1977 and brought with it a dial set with a white logo, as opposed to the first 1665s that were produced with a red logo. It was also the last Sea-Dweller to offer a Plexiglas crystal, a must-have feature for many avid vintage Rolex dive watch collectors.
The Sea-Dweller ref. 1665 that is listed here today is in excellent condition, offering a bezel with light wear, a polished case, defined serial and reference numbers, and an 11-link 93150 Oyster bracelet with some slight stretch. The dial is often the most notable part of any vintage watch, and this handsome Sea-Dweller is no different, displaying the time via Tritium luminous markers and patina Mercedes hands. As a rare vintage Sea-Dweller, this reference commands a premium on the pre-owned Rolex market and will appeal to serious level collectors.
