The GMT-Master was originally launched in 1954, and truly captures the Rolex spirit of innovation. This is a tool watch made for a specific purpose, it’s highly utilitarian, durable and rugged (originally it was designed for Pan Am pilots as their “on duty” watch, but was also worn by Honor Blackman on the set in Goldfinger). Designed as a “GMT” or a watch that allows the owner to track time in two time zones simultaneously, the “root beer” bezel version available here is particularly striking, not only for its gorgeous colors of the dial, but also the hour indexes, which are the reason for its unusual nickname of “nipple”. This steel and gold model is indeed very reminiscent of a previous era, but in a good way – with visually striking colors seldom used in Rolex tool watches.
This particular 1675 was manufactured in 1970 and has a case that has just been polished so it is free of all scratched and its corners are sharp. The root beer bezel is in good shape and shows natural aging. The dial is in beautiful shape. No visible damage and the lume plots have patined to a light creamy hue. A nice visual touch is that the hands have aged at the same rate, thus matching the dial markers perfectly. The head is presented on complimentary, brown, leather strap with yellow stitching that sets off the gold tones of the watch very well. I have worn this watch everyday for 47 years, had it cleaned every 8 or so years, had the bezel replaced with the new one back in the 80s. Paid $400 in Switzerland in 1970. This is the greatest lifetime deal ever!!
