This Rolex Explorer is in overall good vintage condition consistent with its age. The case is in good condition with normal signs of wear. Between the lugs show some wear and the numbers are light, but still visible. The inside caseback is stamped "I.65." The dial is in good, attractive condition with some patina; its a later "Mark 5" tritium service replacement. The lume on the dial has developed patina and aged to a lovely yellow color. The hands have developed patina and the lume in the hands match the color of the lume on the dial nicely; the hands are also tritium service replacements. The 78360 Oyster comes with 13 links and no. 580 end links. The clasp is stamped "F" indicating it is from 1981. The bracelet is in overall good condition with normal signs of wear and a bit of stretch between the links.
Rolex introduced the 1016 Explorer in 1959 and it was in production until 1989 making it one of the longest running produced references from the brand. At the beginning of the run Rolex made the dials glossy and then switched to the matte style around 1966.
The example we are offering here is from circa 1965 and would have been born with a glossy dial and it was later changed to a Mark 5 style service replacement dial. It was very common for Rolex to change and update watches when they come in for routine service and that is exactly what happened with this watch. If you didn't know the serial number, one would think this is just a later 1016 with the Mark 5 dial. These vintage sports Rolex with service dials offer a great value and are a good entry to the world of vintage sport Rolex.
