This Rolex watch is in great, honest vintage condition. The case is in great condition with some wear and scratches. The inside caseback is stamped "6263" which is not uncommon. Rolex was known to mismatch casebacks with different reference numbers on similar models. The pushers are later service replacements. The bezel is in great condition with some wear and scratches. The dial is in excellent condition with light patina. The lume plots are in great condition and some have developed patina. All of the plots are full and round except for the three o'clock plot; it shows some degradation. The bracelet is in good condition with some wear and scratches; it has some stretch between the links. The crystal has some wear and scratches; one to note is at the three o'clock.
Rolex came out with the Daytona in 1963 and it is still in production today. Rolex came out with the reference 6265 around 1971 and this would be the last generation of the manually wound Daytona. The defining characteristics of the reference 6265 are the screw down style pushers and stainless steel bezel. Rolex offered this model in a few variations in stainless steel. Rolex offered them with a silver dial with black sub registers, like the example we have here today or with a black dial with white sub registers. Rolex also offered the 6265 with an exotic black or white dial and these are known as Paul Newman Daytona's. Rolex also offered the 6265 in 14k and 18k gold.
These Daytona's with the red "Daytona" text have been nicknamed the "Big Red" Daytona for obvious reasons and are some of the most sought after vintage watches. Collectors have taken it a step further with this variation calling it a "Floating Big Red Daytona" due to the space between the bottom of the text and the sub-dial underneath.
The example we have here today comes directly from the original owner who got it from his wife for their fifth wedding anniversary in 1980. He told me that he used to wear the watch to time laps when he raced cars recreationally. We love hearing when people actually used these watches for their intended function!
