Vintage Watch Condition Examination:
This Daytona is in overall excellent, vintage condition. The case is in great condition with light wear. The case back has a clear sticker that was added after a service in 2022. The bezel is a later service replacement and is in excellent condition with very light wear. The watch has retained its correct "P302" pushers. The dial is in overall excellent condition with light patina. The red "Daytona" text has remained vibrant. The lume plots on the dial are intact and have aged to a lovely yellow color. The hands are in great condition with light patina and the lume in the hands aged to the same color as the lume on the dial. The bracelet is in excellent condition with light wear.
This watch was serviced by Rolex in May 2022 and hasn't been worn since. It went to the Atelier De Restoration in Geneva where the following was done; the movement was serviced and restored, the case and bracelet were refinished, the bezel was replaced with a service version, the crystal was replaced, the crown & crown tube were replaced, the pushers were cleaned and refinished, and the counter hands were replaced by identical ones. This all cost over $14,000.
Description: Rolex Daytona 6263 "Big Red"
Rolex came out with the Daytona in 1963 and today modern and vintage examples alike are some of the most sought after watches in the world. Rolex came out with the reference 6263 around 1971 and this would be the last generation of the manually wound Daytona. The defining characteristics of the reference 6263 are the screw down style pushers and the black acrylic bezel. Rolex offered this model in a few variations in stainless steel. Rolex offered them with a black dial with white sub registers, like the example we have here today or with a black dial and silver registers. Rolex also offered these with exotic dials known as Paul Newman dials and they offered the model in all gold as well.
The example we are offering here has the striking black dial with red "Daytona" text on the dial and collectors refer to these as the "Big Red" Daytona's. The 6263 is one of the most desirable watches and we have seen a real uptick in demand over the last few years. Collectors tend to gravitate towards the 6263 because of the black acrylic bezel and screw down pushers giving the watch an aggressive, yet classic aesthetic. Paul Newman had a 6263 "Big Red" Daytona very similar to this example (same variation) and that watch sold at auction in 2020 for $5,475,000.
In addition to this being of the most sought after watches this example is fresh to market and comes with its box and papers! The watch also underwent a full restoration at Rolex in 2022 through the Atelier De Restoration program in Geneva and comes with that special wooden box and little booklet specific to this watch.
