This Explorer is in overall great vintage condition consistent with its age. The case is in good condition with normal signs of wear. The caseback is stamped "1016." The numbers between the lugs are visible. The dial is in excellent condition with light patina and the lume has aged to an attractive buttery yellow color. The hands have developed light patina; the lume in the hands has been color corrected/ relumed to match the color of the lume on the dial. This has a no. 7836 Oyster bracelet with 13 links and no. 358 end links. The bracelet is in great condition with some light wear and a bit of stretch.
Rolex introduced the 1016 Explorer in 1959 and it was in production until 1989 making it one of the longest running produced references from the brand. At the beginning of the run Rolex made the dials glossy and then switched to the matte style around 1966. Collectors have identified 5 different dial variations for the matte dial 1016s. This example is circa 1975 and features a Mark 3 dial. We see two different runs of Mark 3 dials, one in the mid 1970s and ones in the late 1980s. Collectors have also noticed that the Mark 3 dials from the mid-1970s tend to have a more yellow colored patina on the lume where as the ones from the late 1980s are typically more white in color.
This example has aged beautifully over the years with his buttery yellow lume that pops perfectly against the matte black dial. In addtion to the lovely patina, this comes with its box and punched papers which is always great! 1016s are some of the most sought after vintage watches and if you are in the market, this is worth considering!
