The Rolex Explorer II reference 1655 was a groundbreaking watch for Rolex originally designed for speleologists, or cave explorers. The steel bezel was supposed to be more durable for the possibility of direct impact with rock rather than bezel inserts used on Submariners and GMT-Masters. In addition, the large orange 24-hour hand was designed for easy determination of whether the wearer is in the day or night as without access to sunlight in caves, it can be difficult for the explorers to know whether it was day or night. These watches mistakenly garnered the nickname Steve McQueen at one point and also have the nickname "Freccione", which is Italian for "The Arrow" in response to the 24-hour hand.
