This Rolex Explorer II is in overall great, honest vintage condition. The case is in good condition with some scratches and nicks; it appears to have been lightly polished. The bevels are still visible on the edge of the lugs. The back of the 11 o'clock lug has a small number hand-engraved "69315" which is the stores registry number. The inside caseback is stamped "1655" and the serial and reference numbers are clearly visible and crisp between the lugs. The Mark II bezel is in good, honest condition with some normal wear and the edges are still sharp; some of the black paint has worn out of the numbers. The dial is in overall excellent condition with some patina around the edge. The lume on the dial has developed patina and has aged to a lovely yellow color. The hands have developed light patina and the lume in the hands have aged to a matching yellow color. The orange 24-hour hand has remained vibrant. The U.S.A oval bracelet has 18 links and in overall good condition with normal signs of wear. There is some of stretch between the links which is common for this style bracelet. The Rolex presentation box is missing the pillow inside.
This watch comes with four extra links and the crystal that came on the watch.
The Rolex 1655 Explorer is instantly recognizable by its distinctive bright orange 24-hour hand and fixed steel bezel. Introduced in 1971, this model was designed specifically for cave explorers. The bold orange hand serves a functional purpose - helping wearers distinguish between day and night in environments where natural light is absent, such as in dark caves.
Initially, the 1655 wasn't a hit. Its unconventional design stood apart from other Rolex models, which limited its appeal. Moreover, its specialized use made it less attractive to the general public. Ironically, these same factors have now made it one of the most coveted and rare vintage Rolex sports models.
This particular example comes directly from the original owner and hails from the early production run, featuring the sought after "straight" seconds hand, only found on the early ones. It was purchased locally in Southern California at Donovan & Seamans Co. in the late 1970s. In fact, it was bought on October 7, 1977, as noted on the receipt and guarantee - 47 years ago! The original price was $495, and the owner managed to retain the box, punched papers, receipt, and nearly all the original accessories from the time of purchase. Even a Rolex catalog and price list from the dealer were kept intact! Its also interesting to note that the Catalog and price list have "Watches of Switzerland" stamped on them making us wonder perhaps they supplied the watches to the dealer/ had some relationship. Another neat detail is that the back of the 11 o'clock lug has a small light hand-engraved number "69315" which is the stores registry number. We see the same number on the sales receipt and hand-written on the very top of the Rolex papers, this must have been how they keep track of the watch and papers. We have seen this before with watches sold through retailers like Tiffany; we love these details!
Interestingly, the watch, which dates back to circa 1973, wasn’t sold until 1977 - a testament to its initial lack of popularity. The original owner also opted for the USA Jubilee bracelet, adding a unique touch to the watch. For the full story behind this watch, be sure to check out the accompanying video in the listing.
