This GMT-Master is in great vintage condition with wear consistent with age. The case is strong with wear, scratches, and some nicks; the bevels are still visible. The bezel ring is in great condition and has remained sharp. The fuchsia bezel insert is in excellent condition with some wear and scratches; it is tight when rotating. The colors are still vibrant and the back of the bezel is fuchsia colored. This watch has retained its correct date wheel with closed 6s and hooked 7s. The matte dial is in great condition with light patina. The lume on the dial has developed patina and aged to a pleasing pale yellow color. The hands have developed patina and the lume in the hands has aged to a pale yellow color, close to the color of the lume on the dial. The lume in the GMT and seconds hand has aged slightly darker than the other hands. The expanding bracelet is in great condition with some scratches and wear. We had the bracelet professionally restored and the bracelet is overall tight with tension between the links. The crystal has some scratches and light wear.
The GMT Master is Rolex’s signature pilot’s watch, complete with dual-time capabilities. It came to market in 1955, with ref. 1675 following shortly after in 1959. It’s one of the most sought-after vintage Rolex watches on the secondary market because it’s instantly recognizable with its 24-hour bezel and dedicated GMT hand. The Rolex 1675 was also notably the first GMT Master to use crown guards. Rolex initially used glossy dials in the 1675 until around 1966 and switched to matte dials.
This circa 1967 example is in overall beautiful, honest condition with it's beautifully aged lume and fuchsia bezel. Collectors refer to this dial variation as a Mark I "Long E." When looking at the "Rolex" text on the dial the "E" has a longer central bar (same length as the top and bottom ones) and that is where this nickname comes from. Rolex made many iterations of the GMT over the years and this watch has a couple additional interesting things to note. This watch has a "thin case" which is approximately 12.7mm and Rolex did this until approximately 1967. This watch also has the correct date-wheel for the time period with the closed 6's and 9s as well as hooked 7s. This watch also has a "small" GMT hand which is correct for these early matte dial variants. It's amazing how this little detail can give the watch a different look. This watch is coming directly from the family of the original owner and has a fantastic overall look and feel. These fuchsia GMTs are becoming more sought after by collectors and if you are in the market for one, this is worth considering!
