What set it apart was the shape of the lugs, which featured fixed strap bars, hence the name "FXD," which is an abbreviation for the word "FIXED." It's also worth noting that the first model featured a bi-directional bezel with an inverted diving scale, while the rest of the non-FXD models at the time had a uni-directional bezel with a traditional 60-minute diver's scale. This design choice reflects the brand's longtime partnership with the Marine Nationale, whose divers would likely use the bezel for navigation rather than timing decompression stops.
