This Submariner is in great vintage condition with wear consistent with age. The case is in good condition with normal signs of wear. The inner case back is engraved "1680 I. 70". The serial and reference numbers are clearly visible. The bezel ring has remained sharp and the insert has aged to a lovely grey color throughout; it has hints of blue depending on the lighting. The pip is a later replacement. This watch has retained its correct non-triplock crown (no 3 dots). The matte dial is in great condition with some patina/ light wear. The lume on the dial has developed patina and aged to a striking lemon yellow color. The hands have developed light patina and the lume has been color corrected/ relumed to match the lume on the dial. The folded Oyster bracelet is in great condition with normal signs of wear with some stretch between the links which is not uncommon. The crystal has some wear and nicks along the six o'clock edge.
Rolex introduced the reference 1680 around 1969 and it was in production until roughly 1979. This was the first Submariner to feature the date function and Rolex still offers date and no-date models to this day. This example has the word "Submariner" written in red text and collectors refer to these as the "Red Submariner." Rolex did this until around 1975 and then they switched to all white text.
Collectors have identified six different "Red" 1680 dial variations. This watch features a Mark IV dial, distinguished by the feet-first depth rating with open 6s and red "Submariner" text painted over white text. This can be seen clearly under a loupe. It also includes a folded link bracelet with an error diver's extension where Rolex misspelled "patented" as "Pateted." These error bracelets are becoming more sought after by collectors, adding an extra layer of rarity to the watch.
This watch has aged beautifully and comes directly from the original owner, who preserved the papers over the years - something we appreciate! We love how this one aged and how the lume really pops against the matte black dial and goes really well with the grey bezel.
