The Rolex reference 1680 was released in the mid 1960's. It is the first Submariner to feature a date wheel. For the first few years of this model's production, the word "Submariner" was printed in red on the dial. Many Rolex collectors consider the "Red Sub" or "Single Red" as the entry point into "serious" collecting. Another distinguishing characteristic of the ref. 1680 is the raised crystal. The acrylic crystal is raised 3mm above the case making this model particularly recognizable.
All red submariner models are powered by an automatic calibre 1575 movement. However, the rotor bridge is often stamped 1570. Rolex was able to interchange these parts because the 1575 is essentially the same movement as the 1570, except with the addition of the date function.
This 1680 features a Mark II matte black dial. The Mark II dial can be distinguished by the "meters before feet" display, the open "6's," and the red lettering of the word "Submariner" being printed on top of white. This dial is in excellent condition and its beautiful creamy markers are all intact. Although the case has been previously lightly polished, the original bevels are still clearly visible. This watch is stunning piece of Rolex history that any collector would be proud to own.
