This Submariner is in great vintage condition with wear consistent with age. The stainless steel case is strong with normal wear. The matte black dial is in great condition with light patina. The bezel insert is in overall great condition with some scratches and normal wear; the pip has developed patina and is cracked. The lume on the dial have developed patina and aged to a lovely pale yellow color. The hands have developed light patina and the lume in the hands has aged matching the lume on the dial. The bracelet is in great condition with light wear. It features a 93150 stainless steel Oyster with 11 links and 593 end links. The clasp, stamped "03," indicates it is a later replacement. The bracelet is in overall good condition with a bit of stretch between the links and normal signs of wear.
Pre-owned Rolex Submariner ref 16800 (Circa 1984) is referred to as a transitional model. Rolex went from acrylic to sapphire crystal, an updated movement with quick-set date, and at the beginning of the run the watches featured matte dials like the previous 1680. Later in the production Rolex changed the dials to glossy with white gold surrounds. These are known as transitional models due to the blend of older and new features Rolex decided to use together. These early 16800's with matte dials are the perfect mix of vintage styling with modern touches like the sapphire glass and quick-set date.
The dial on this example is just beautiful, the perfectly aged "post it" yellow lume plots contrast so nicely with the matte black background. We have seen interest in these matte 16800s rise recently and its easy to understand why; you get the matte dial vintage look and those big lume plots combined with modern functionality giving you the best of both worlds.
Watch was in condition as pictured and described. Some major dents and scuffs on the bracelet/end-link were hidden well by the lighting but were very noticeable in person. Overall the watch was in great shape for the age.

I’ve bought multiple modern pieces from Bob’s and had a great experience every time. I’ve been looking to buy a birth year Rolex for awhile now and for me, that’s a late production run 16800. Couldn’t be happier with the watch and for those out there looking for a Sub, you should seriously consider the 16800. It has some great “modern” features, but holds true to a more vintage feel and elegance. Incredibly comfortable on the wrist and will undoubtedly continue to grow in value in my opinion. It’s a can’t miss buy all the way around.
