The concept behind the Oyster Perpetual Explorer was developed shortly after Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary became the first men to reach the summit of Mount Everest successfully. Rolex wanted to create a timepiece that was tough enough to withstand the world's harshest extremes, and the Explorer mountaineer's tool watch was born. Its feature set is simple and includes a modest case with an airtight seal, a protective crystal over the dial, a time-only movement, and a resilient stainless steel finish. The ref. 214270 that you see here today is a contemporary example of the collection that also features improved luminous material on the dial, a sapphire crystal, and a chronometer-rated calibre 3132 perpetual movement. The ref. 214270 also brings with it a slightly larger 39mm Oyster case, creating a distinctive modern aesthetic
