Honoring the Original with the Oyster Perpetual 39

Paul Altieri

The entry level Rolex with the utmost respect for the brands’ illustrious history.

Positioned as the most accessible Rolex model, the Oyster Perpetual exudes simple elegance in its clean design. The Oyster Perpetual’s unassuming look should not be mistaken for being basic, as its rich heritage and modern technological advances clearly dispute that. Intrinsically linked to the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, the original 1926 Rolex Oyster watch, today’s Oyster Perpetual collection most clearly celebrates the brand’s legendary inventions and innovations – the Oyster case, the Oyster Perpetual Movement and the Oyster bracelet.

A Few Changes To The Oyster Perpetual 39

For 2015, Rolex launched a larger version of the legendary watch with a 39mm sized case with three different dial color options – dark rhodium, red grape and blue – and sunray finish. The clean dial lends maximum legibility with tasteful stick hour markers and selective luminescence. Shielding the face of the watch is scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

The Oyster Perpetual 39 is easily read for its hour markers.

Central to the form and function of the Oyster Perpetual 39 is its Oyster case with a guaranteed waterproofness to a depth of 330 feet thanks to its watertight screwed-down fluted caseback and Rolex patented Twinlock double waterproofness system.

The robust Oyster case is built to protect the Oyster Perpetual Movement within from the harsh outside elements. The perpetual rotor – an invention introduced by Rolex in 1931 and later adopted by the watchmaking industry at large – allows the watch to run on the energy provided by the motion of the wearer’s wrist rather than manual winding. And within the new Oyster Perpetual 39 we find the Rolex proprietary Caliber 3132 equipped with a Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers for superior resilience to magnetic fields, shocks, and other extreme conditions. Bearing the name “Superlative Chronometer”, the COSC certification of the Oyster Perpetual 39 is supplemented with Rolex’s own in-house testing, further demonstrating the timepiece’s first-class precision and reliability.

The case and bracelet of the Oyster Perpetual 39 is fashioned from 904L steel, a particularly tough type of stainless steel that is extremely anti-corrosive and ubiquitous in Rolex watches. The flat three-piece Oyster bracelet, first introduced in the late 1930s, is outfitted with the iconic Oysterclasp and offers the wearer optimal comfort and security.

The Oyster Perpetual 39 joins a family of watches that range in size and dial color options, offering plenty of versatility. Size choices include 26mm, 31mm, 34mm, 36mm and now 39mm. The assortment of dial colors – silver, white, pink, olive green, champagne, grey, blue and red grape – gives variety, while the domed bezel highlights the watch’s elegant minimalism.

A striking balance between refined style and reliable function, the simplicity of the Oyster Perpetual allows the Rolex hallmarks to shine through.
