The 2022 US Open wrapped up over the weekend with nineteen-year-old Carlos Alcaraz from Spain defeating Casper Ruud from Norway to win the men’s US Open title. The young star is now ranked no. 1 in the world for men’s tennis. The win also marks Alcaraz’s first career Grand Slam title and makes him the second youngest men’s US Open winner, with legendary Pete Sampras being the youngest of all time. As if that weren’t already impressive enough, last weekend’s win also makes Alcaraz the youngest no. 1 ranked player ever and the fourth Spaniard to hold a world no. 1 ranking.
The up-and-coming tennis champ and Rolex ambassador wore none other than the coveted Rolex Daytona 116500 as he proudly posed with his US Open trophy.
The 2022 US Open Tennis Championships
2022 marks the 142nd US Open, which was held at the USTA Billie Jean King Nation Tennis Center in New York City. Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Świątek took home the titles for the men’s and women’s singles, dethroning defending champions Daniil Medvedev and Emma Raducanu. Alcaraz defeated Ruud 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-3 for the title, eventually winning eight of the final 11 games to take home his first Grand Slam title.
Who is Carlos Alcaraz?
Carlos Alcaraz is a professional tennis player from Villena, Spain. He made his professional ATP debut at the 2020 Rio Open, defeating Albert Ramos Viñolas. The following year, Alcaraz became the youngest participant in the men’s singles at the Australian Open, the youngest match winner at the Madrid Open, and the youngest player in the top 100 at just 18 years old. 2022 marks another record-breaking year for the ambitious teen dubbed “one of the most exciting next-generation talents in sports” by the New York Times. He earned his first world no. 1 ranking, grabbed two Masters Titles, and won his first US Open championship. Earlier this year, Carlos Alcaraz added Rolex ambassador to his impressive resume.
Carlos Alcaraz’ Rolex Daytona Ref. 116500
Photos of Carlos posing with his shiny new US Champion trophy are all over the web, with his Rolex Daytona 116500 taking center stage in many of the shots. It’s easy to spot with its lustrous black ceramic bezel, matching black dial, and stainless steel finish.
The Daytona 116500 has been at the top of many avid collector’s must-have lists since it hit the market in 2016. Much of its popularity lies in the fact that reference 116500 is the first Daytona to don a ceramic – aka “Cerachrom” – bezel. It also features Rolex’s in-house caliber 4130 Perpetual movement with bi-directional self-winding, a Paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring, chronograph functions, and a 72-hour power reserve. Not to mention, the powerhouse movement is also accurate up to -2/+2 seconds per day.
Rolex also equips the Daytona with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, a Triplock waterproof screw-down crown with 100 meters of waterproofness, and long-lasting Chromalight luminescent material. At 40mm in diameter, the Daytona is a classic size and weight for Rolex. It wears on Rolex’s sporty three-link Oyster bracelet and boasts an innovative Oysterlock with a 5mm Easylink extension clasp. The Daytona 116500 is always presented in 904L-grade Oyster steel with a black bezel and is produced with either a black or white dial. Although we think the black dial Daytona suits Alcaraz’s wrist perfectly.
It’s a watch fit for any rising tennis star. We can’t wait to see which Rolex Carlos Alcaraz will wear next.
