Magnificent Seven: Our Ideal Weekly Watch Rotation

Paul Altieri

A watch for every day of the week? Sounds like heaven. If we had to choose our weekly rotation of watches, it would look something like this…

Monday – The DayDate

While on Sunday you might be trying to forget that tomorrow is Monday, you’ll probably need a few reminders on Monday itself. Keep yourself in check with a DayDate, it’ll not only help you get to your meetings on time, but also make sure you hit your deadlines on the right day and date. Plus, Monday’s you need to treat yourself a little, and this indulgent watch definitely hits the mark.

Rolex Day-Date 118239
A Black Dial Rolex Day-Date 118239 is the perfect way to kick start your watch rotation

Here we’re featuring a white gold, 40mm DayDate 118239 with a white face and beautiful gold Roman numeral hour markers. At 12-o’clock you can read the day at 3-o’clock the date. White gold hands swing around the bright white face that’s easy to read, your eye moving away only to look at the fluted bezel. Inside is a trusty automatic 3155 movement that will never let you down, making this the most trusty watch to start the week out with.

Tuesday – Polar Explorer

Wading through the beginning of the work week, the Explorer will help you tackle even the toughest Tuesdays – just ask Tom Hardy (pictured below). Built to withstand the wildest expeditions, this watch boasts a stainless steel case that won’t crack under pressure (up to 330 feet), a waterproof screw-down crown and a precise Automatic 3185 movement.

Fair warning, though, if all the mechanisms don’t distract you from the work day, that Polar white face surely will. The snow-like face makes makes this unlike any other Rolex you’ve seen. The lume markers are also highly visible in the dark, and outlined in black to pop against the face. Be sure to also check out the striking orange 23-hour hand which is used to keep track of time via the stainless steel bezel.

Wednesday – Omega Globemaster

With it’s striking blue face and bracelet and an effortlessly modern feel that nods to the past, the Omega Globemaster is just the kind of pick-me-up we need to get over the hump. Plus, this watch was the first to pass the Swiss Master Chronometer test, making it truly special and definitely a conversation starter.

Besides the incredible color, with this watch your eye is first drawn to that stainless steel scratch-resistant fluted bezel and the pie-pan dial that adds a wonderful sense of depth. Around the face are illuminous Super-LumiNova hour markers and hands, and if you look closely, you’ll also notice the rhodium-plated Constellation star above 6-o’clock and the date. Of course, all of this is run by Omega’s famous Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8900. Not a bad way to wrap up the middle of your weekly watch rotation.

Thursday – Daytona

Because, why not? This iconic watch will get your pulse racing just a little bit faster while you sport it at the office. Plus, it’s unique and striking look makes it easily transition to date night, too. For a great day-to-night example, we’d choose a stainless steel and ceramic Rolex Daytona 116500.

Inside this Chronograph ticks an automatic 4130 movement with 44-jewels, which runs not only the hour and minute markers but the subdials at the center of the dial. Around the case is also the famous bezel, this time, outfitted in stainless steel, allowing the wearer to measure various driving times. The face is bright white and easily legible, drawing your eye in to stare at the state of the art complications. To square the watch off, Rolex outfitted this model with a its patented Oystersteel bracelet, giving it an effortlessly elevated look for a sports watch.

Friday – Panerai Radiomir

For casual Friday, we’re strapping on a killer Panerai Radiomir. While it has an inherently rugged, casual feel, this watch is also striking and dignified with a round-edged square case and that signature dark face. This 42mm version, while still large, is actually smaller than other models and sits beautifully on the wrist.

Looking closely at those luminous hour markers, you realize they’re not applied to the face itself. Instead, the dial was created out of two plates, one with a coating on luminous materials the other with cut-outs for the hours, only adding to the uniqueness of this timepiece. Running the mechanisms is a hand-wound P.999 with a whopping 60-hour power reserve which sits inside at just 11.7mm thick — adding to the sheer wearability of this otherwise oversized watch.

Saturday – Yachtmaster

The out of office look should be fun and bold, making the Yachtmaster an easy choice to kick off the weekend. The two-toned stainless steel and Everose gold 116681 could cheer anyone up while running errands and is the obvious choice for a Saturday sail or beers on the dock.

The incredible blue 44mm bezel is almost mesmerizing, outfitted with matching Everose gold numerals that draw your eye around the stark-white face. On the face is a wonderful array of complications run by an Automatic 31-jewel calibre 4161 movement. Features include a programmable flyback regatta timer, a seconds sub-counter, and central hour, minute, and seconds hands — but in all honesty, you’ll get just as much joy just looking at this timepiece.

Sunday – DateJust

This watch is effortless. It slips on easily and looks good with your Sunday-best or around-the-house digs. If we had to reach for just one of the many variations of this model, we’d chose the stainless steel 116234 with a white gold fluted bezel with a Rhodium dial.

Of course, at 3-o’clock you can read the date, but don’t mind that so much, because Sundays are for relaxing. Instead, we’re admiring the roman numeral hour markers, the inner reflecting ring and that stainless Jubilee bracelet which dresses this watch up a bit. Inside is a 3135 Automatic movement, and it’s protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, waterproof screw-down crown — making this a practical weekend watch, too.
