A Closer Look at the Cerachrom Bezel GMT Master II 116713

Paul Altieri

It seems as though every watch Rolex produces becomes an instant classic.  An excellent example is the GMT Master that came to market in 1954.  Its innovative design allowed the wearer to keep time like never before via a 24-hour rotatable bezel that was developed by Rolex as a means to help commercial pilots all over the world sync to military time.  Decades later, Rolex released an upgraded version of their successful pilot’s watch called the GMT Master II in 1983.  This newer addition to the GMT line carried with it a calibre 3085 automatic movement that was built to include an independent 24-hour hand and the ability to read a third-time zone on the dial.

One of the newest upgrades to the iconic GMT Master pilot’s watch came in 2006 with the 6-digit GMT Master II ref. 116713.  Collectors prefer this watch over older Rolex sports models for several reasons, one reason being the modern style that accompanies the Oyster case.  Also referred to as the “Super Case” or “Maxi Dial”, the ref. 116713 is characterized by a standard 40mm Oyster case flanked by broader lugs and a dial topped with larger luminous hour markers and broader hands.  This modern mens Rolex also boasts a certified Swiss Chronometer calibre 3186 movement.  At first glance, this mens Rolex is certainly impressive.  Taking a closer look at the fine details included in the ref. 116713 reveals that this particular GMT Master II is a seriously impressive sports watch.

The GMT Master II 116713 is an impressive watch for a plethora of reasons.

The case and Oyster bracelet feature a striking two-tone finish that utilizes 904L stainless steel and 18 karat yellow gold.  A milled Oysterlock clasp offers the highly desirable 5mm Easylink extension link.  This convenient feature allows the wearer to adjust the bracelet up to 5mm without the use of tools for a perfect fit throughout the day.  The men’s Rolex ref. 116713 also boasts a Cerachrom bezel and was the first Rolex watch to offer this highly anticipated bezel variation.  Crafted from ceramic made in-house by Rolex, the Cerachrom bezel is almost entirely scratch-resistant.  Just like the sapphire crystal that often accompanies the case, it takes a significant amount of force to damage the surface of the Cerachrom bezel.

The GMT Master II was a significant addition to the GMT Master line.  One of its most impressive functions was the independent 24-hour hand that is offered in a cool green hue on the ref. 116713.  Since the 24-hour hand can be adjusted without disturbing the other hands on the dial; the GMT Master II is capable of tracking up to three time zones at once, a truly incredible feat.

Rolex developed the GMT Master as a pilot’s watch, but it has since proven to be quite popular among collectors of all professions.  In fact, many Rolex aficionados may argue that the GMT Master is one of the most popular Rolex watches on the market today.  The two-tone variation, just like the Yellow Rolesor ref. 116713 showcased here today is an excellent choice for collectors who seek a stylish pre-owned GMT Master II at a mid-level price.
