The Datejust Turn-o-Graph "Thunderbird" was Rolex's first official tool watch, coming to market in the 1950s. Fixed with a rotatable bezel, the Turn-o-Graph paved the way for every tool watch in the brand's catalog that would follow. The model earned its nickname "Thunderbird" after the US Air Force's Aerobatic team the Thunderbirds, of which the military outfitted the pilots with Turn-o-Graph watches. This also made the Turn-o-Graph an official military-issued timepiece. The ref. 16253 came to market in the late 1970s, replacing the long-running ref. 1625 and bringing with it a 27-jewel calibre 3035 perpetual movement as well as the distinction of "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" on the dial.
