The 1680 reference was produced from 1969 to 1979 in this configuration with an acrylic crystal. In 1979 it was later upgraded to a sapphire crystal. The red letter Submariner line was manufactured for only the first half of the production run of the 1680’s. This example qualifying as an MK6 dial, characterized by the feet first depth rating, and the closed “6” numerals. The single red line is a highly collectible version of the 1680, as it brings a flash of color to the otherwise serious black dial.
In addition to the lettering, this example sports a beautiful eggshell patina to the dial and extends to the matching handset as well. The bezel has some age to it adding nicely to the vintage look. The case is in excellent condition with natural age and the bevels are beautiful highly visible.
