The original GMT Master series was discontinued with the ref. 16700. As an integral piece of Rolex history, the 16700 GMT is a prized collector's item. During its production run, which lasted about a decade from the late 1980s into the 1990s, the ref. 16700 was produced with either Tritium or Superluminova on the dial. It also featured either a Jubilee or Oyster bracelet and was the first GMT Master reference to feature white gold surrounds on the dial and a sapphire crystal. Its predecessors featured painted hour markers and acrylic crystal. The ref. 16700 continued alongside its successor, the GMT Master II, for several years and enjoyed a fair amount of success as its more affordable counterpart.
