This Submariner is in overall great, honest vintage condition. The inner caseback is stamped: "5513" and "I.72". The serial and reference numbers are visible between the lugs. The case is in good condition with normal signs of wear and some nicks. The beveled edges show wear, but are still visible. The bezel ring has remained sharp. The bezel insert have developed patina and wear. The entire bezel insert has aged to a beautiful super dark grey color, this can be hard to notice in the photos. The crown shows some wear. The matte dial is in good condition and has developed some patina. The lume has developed patina and aged to a striking even yellow color. The hands have patina and the lume in the hands have aged to a similar yellow color as the lume on the dial. The stainless steel folded Oyster has 12 links and a "PATETED" extension link. Back of clasp is stamped 4/71 indicating it is from 1971. The folded Oyster bracelet is in great condition with normal wear and some stretch between the links which is not uncommon for this style bracelet.
Rolex introduced ref. 5513 around 1962 and it was in production until 1989. It was one of the longest continually produced references from the brand. Rolex initially used glossy dials in this model and swapped to matte dials around 1966. When Rolex went to the matte dial they also put the depth rating as "200m = 660ft" and these are known as "meters first" in the collecting community. Eventually Rolex would swap the depth rating to feet first around the early 1970s and have continued this trend to the modern offerings. The watch we have here has a "feet first" depth rating. One theory on this change is that Rolex wanted to boost sales in the United States, but to our knowledge Rolex has not made any definitive statements on this shift.
This example comes from the family of the original owner who kept the box, anchor, and hangtag; when looking closely at the box one side has a "5513" sticker - we love these details! It's hard to capture the beauty of the bezel and lume color in photos for this watch, in the sunlight it really pops. We love the combination of the super dark bezel with the striking squash colored lume against the matte black dial; we give it a chef's kiss. If you have been looking for a 5513 with character, this is worth considering!
