The writing (Audemars Piguet Quartz No. 11XX) including the number on the caseback are all clearly legible. The case is in good condition with scratches/ normal signs of wear. The gold bezel is in good condition with some wear and scratches. The dial is in overall good, attractive condition with some patina and wear. The hour markers and hands have developed patina. The lume on the dial and in the hands has developed patina and aged to a pleasing yellow color. The integrated bracelet is in overall great condition with 23 links. The bracelet has normal signs of wear and scratches; it has light stretch overall. The clasp is signed by AP and stamped "M8."
Audemars Piguet released the Royal Oak in 1972, claiming the title as the first luxury sports watch. Initially, the Gérald Genta masterpiece was only available in one variation - the ref. 5402. It took AP a few years to expand upon the collection, adding a women's model to the mix (aka Royal Oak II) in 1976, followed by different metal finishes, case sizes, and even movement types, including quartz. Today, the portfolio is home to more than 500 different RO variations. So what makes this model so special? Released in 1982, the ref. 56023 and its variations feature a desirable mid-size case and a quartz movement - the caliber 2506 (26mm in diameter and 3.15mm thick.) The watch is svelte, at around 7mm thick, and boasts a very approachable size and weight for men and women alike. Additionally, the ref. 56023SA is a steel and gold model with a striking grey "Petite Tapisserie" dial decorated with applied yellow gold markers, matching gold hands, and an old font logo with a sans serif typeface.
The watch has all the usual Royal Oak design elements, including the angular case with a matching integrated bracelet, an octagonal bezel with exposed screws, and a faceted crown. While quite unorthodox in 1972, this aesthetic would influence many of the industry's top brands with similar offerings from Patek Philippe, Rolex, and more.
